The predecessor of the school was Tianjin Business University founded by French Jesuits in Tianjin in 1921. Later, the name of the school changed several times, and it went through various periods such as Tianjin Business College, Jingu University, Tianjin Normal University, and Tianjin Normal University. In 1960, it was transformed into a comprehensive university and named Hebei University. In 1970, it moved from Tianjin to the national historical and cultural city of Baoding, Hebei. In 2005, Hebei Provincial Staff Medical College and its affiliated hospitals were merged into Hebei University.
