Its predecessor was Beiyang University, founded on October 2, 1895, and it is the first modern university in China. In 1951, it was renamed Tianjin University after being adjusted by the national departments. It was one of the first 16 national key universities identified by the CPC Central Committee in 1959, and the first batch of key universities under the "211 Project" and "Project 985".
