The bottomhole powered hard rock coring tool independently developed by the Exploration and Technology Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences has recently successfully completed a sea trial in the Shanwei sea area. For the first time, the hollow bottomhole powered drilling tool has achieved a drilling depth of 10.1 meters, a coring depth of 8.69 meters, and a coring rate of 86.04%, far exceeding the IODP hard rock coring level. The success of this sea trial marks a breakthrough in China's research on key equipment for hard rock coring in ocean drilling.

It is reported that the biggest advantage of bottom hole power coring compared to conventional rotary coring is that the rotary power of the rock breaking drill bit relies on mud driving, and the drill rod does not need to rotate. This type of core drilling tool significantly improves the stability of drilling and the stress on the drill pipe, greatly improving the safety of the wellbore and the drilling tool. Therefore, bottomhole dynamic hard rock coring technology has always been an ideal coring tool for ocean scientific drilling. From theoretical research to reliability testing in the field on land, the marine drilling technology research team has spent three years continuously optimizing and improving the downhole power coring drilling tool in four rounds. They have developed a hollow screw motor coring tool with a diameter of 197 millimeters, with a single coring length of 7.3 meters and a coring diameter of 55 millimeters. The test was conducted in intact granite rock layers on land, with a maximum drilling efficiency of 15 meters/hour and a heart rate of nearly 100%. This sea trial was carried out by the Marine Geology No. 10 drilling vessel, using a combination of full section and core drilling construction technology. It successfully drilled 80 meters below the seabed and penetrated the granite layer. During the sea trial, the characteristics of high drilling efficiency, strong stability, and good core quality of the bottom hole power drilling tool were fully utilized, and all technical parameters met the expected design indicators.

The successful sea trial of the downhole power hard rock coring drilling tool is the world's first successful case of hollow screw hard rock coring, solving the world's technical problem of "hollow screw+rope coring", providing a new set of process tools for ocean scientific drilling and ultra deep hole hard rock coring, and providing strong technical support for China's ocean drilling to penetrate the Moho surface and explore the deep mysteries of the Earth.
