Preliminary Investigation Results of Volaris Flight 2283 Crash Released: Icing Led to Loss of Control

On the afternoon of September 6th, local time, the Brazilian Air Force Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA) released the preliminary findings of the investigation into the crash of Volaris Flight 2283. The investigation concluded that the aircraft was certified to fly in icing conditions, and the crew possessed certifications and experience with flying in such conditions. The crew received relevant weather information before takeoff, and the flight operated in heavy icing conditions. The crew did not declare an emergency, and the aircraft lost control due to icing.

The aircraft, which was flying from Cascavel, Paran, to So Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport on August 9th, crashed in Vinhedo, So Paulo, killing all 62 people on board.

The preliminary investigation findings indicate that the aircraft received weather information regarding icing conditions prior to departure, and the crew possessed the necessary experience to handle such situations. However, the aircraft encountered severe icing during flight, ultimately leading to loss of control. Investigators highlighted that the crew did not declare an emergency during the flight, which may have been due to an error in judgment regarding the aircraft's condition.

CENIPA stated that they will conduct a more detailed investigation to determine the specific cause of the accident and implement appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

This accident serves as a reminder of the importance of aviation safety. Icing is a common hazard in aviation, and flight crews must remain vigilant and take timely action to address it.
