A Scary Experience with Douyin E-commerce Livestream Membership Scam

I received a call from a local number and picked up. The caller was a woman with a Southern accent. She asked, "Are you xxx?" I replied, "Yes." She said, "You subscribed to the Douyin e-commerce livestream membership on the 26th of last month. Did you subscribe intentionally or unintentionally?" I was stunned because I watch Douyin every day and wasn't sure if I had subscribed.

"I didn't subscribe," I responded. "It shows that you've already subscribed. If you don't cancel, it will deduct 8xx yuan every month and 9xxx yuan a year," she continued.

"What should I do now?" I panicked and asked her.

"Do as I say," she replied.

At this point, I was suspicious and wanted to record the conversation in case anything went wrong. However, I couldn't record for some unknown reason, so I had to use another phone to record.

The following conversation was like a thrilling script:

"Open Douyin, then click on 'Mine'. After clicking 'Mine', look for three horizontal bars on the top right. Can you see the three horizontal bars?" the scammer asked.

"Yes," I replied.

"If you see it, click on the three horizontal bars. After clicking on the three horizontal bars, click on 'My Wallet'. Can you see 'My Wallet'?" She continued to instruct.

"Yes," I followed her instructions.

"If you see it, click on 'My Wallet', and then look at the top right. Do you see a gear and a headset? Can you see the headset?"

"Yes," I responded.

"If you see it, click on the headset. After clicking on the headset, check if you see a customer service center page or any other page?"

"Yes, customer service center," I replied.

"Do you see 'Online Customer Service' at the bottom of the phone screen?"

"Yes," I continued to answer.

"If you see it, click on 'Online Customer Service'. After clicking on 'Online Customer Service', check if you see 'Livestream Issues'?"

"Yes, I see it," I replied.

"If you see it, click on 'Livestream Issues'. Ok, now check if you have entered a customer service assistant page?"

"Yes," I answered.

"The customer service assistant page says, 'Hello, how can I help you', right?" She asked.

"Yes," I replied.

"Do you see an input box for text at the bottom of your phone screen?" She asked.

"I see it," I replied.

"If you see it, click on 'I want to cancel the e-commerce livestream membership' and click 'Send'," she finally instructed.

I didn't know what would happen after clicking 'Send', but I realized this was the final step and didn't dare click it. Even though the scammer kept urging me, I said I would wait.

I had to find out the truth. I decided to find the Douyin official customer service number and ask if I had subscribed to the e-commerce livestream membership.

I searched my Douyin account and finally found the online customer service. I asked if I had purchased the e-commerce livestream membership, and the online customer service clearly told me that my account hadn't purchased it and warned me against scams.

After the Douyin customer service replied, I called the scammer back. I wanted to know what she would have me do next. However, I called multiple times, and the scammer's phone was always busy. It seems that she was busy scamming another victim.

This terrifying experience made me realize that online scams are everywhere. We must stay vigilant, not easily trust strangers, and avoid clicking on unknown links. We should also avoid disclosing personal information casually.

This experience made me deeply understand the importance of online security and I am grateful for the prompt response and professional service of the Douyin customer service.

In the future, I will be more careful and cautious to avoid falling into similar scams again.
