Lesson Learned from Selling Gift Cards on Xianyu: Be Wary of Online Scams and Protect Your Information!
Recently, my company gave out two gift cards as benefits. I didn't need them personally, so I decided to sell them at a lower price on Xianyu. Shortly after listing them, a buyer contacted me, claiming they urgently needed them and wanted to complete the transaction quickly.
Initially, the buyer placed an order but didn't pay immediately. When I asked if they had paid, they replied with "Paid," along with a screenshot (as shown in Picture 2). I didn't look closely at the screenshot and thought they had paid, so I sent the card number and PIN of one of the cards. Only after sending it did I realize my terrible mistake! The order status still showed "Pending Payment"!
My heart sank. I immediately retracted the message containing the PIN, but it was too late the image had already been saved. I rushed to check the shopping app and found that the first card had been redeemed! Furious, I adjusted the order price to reflect the cost of one card and demanded payment. However, the buyer still tried to trick me into providing the PIN for my other card, continuing their attempt to defraud me.
This experience taught me a harsh lesson about the importance of being cautious in online transactions, especially when dealing with sensitive information like PINs and passwords.
Here's what happened:
That day, I just listed the gift cards on Xianyu when I received a message. The buyer stated they needed the cards urgently and wanted to buy them quickly. I thought, "I'm selling them at a lower price anyway," and was eager to close the deal. After the buyer placed an order, they didn't pay immediately. I privately messaged them asking if they had paid. They replied "Paid," and included a screenshot.
I didn't examine the screenshot carefully and assumed they had paid. So I sent the card number and PIN of one card. Only after hitting send did I realize my serious error! The order status still said "Pending Payment"! I panicked and instantly retracted the message containing the PIN, but it was too late the buyer had already saved the screenshot.
Frantically, I logged into the shopping app and discovered the first card had been redeemed! I was furious and immediately adjusted the order price to reflect the cost of one card, demanding payment. Still, the buyer tried to trick me into sending the PIN for my other card, continuing to try to scam me.
This experience has made me keenly aware that online transactions must be conducted with caution, particularly when dealing with sensitive information like PINs and passwords.
The following advice is intended to prevent similar situations:
- Confirm Payment Before Providing Information. Do not overlook basic transaction procedures in your rush to close a deal. Always confirm the buyer has paid before providing any sensitive information like PINs.
- Carefully Verify the Order Status. Before providing a PIN, always carefully check the order status to ensure payment has been made.
- Don't Trust Screenshots. Screenshots provided by the buyer might be forged. Always verify payment information through official channels.
- Protect Your Personal Information. In all transactions, be vigilant about protecting your personal information. Do not easily disclose sensitive details like card numbers or passwords.
I hope my experience serves as a reminder for everyone to be more cautious and avoid similar situations.
