State Grid Corporation of China's Comprehensive Smart Energy Company (hereinafter referred to as "State Grid Comprehensive Energy"), leveraging the "Tianshu No. 1" Smart Energy Internet of Things platform and Alibaba DAMO Academy's optimization solver, has developed the country's first optimization solution subsystem for industrial and commercial energy storage. This subsystem provides users with minute-level dynamic updates of intelligent charging and discharging strategies, helping to achieve multiple goals, including reducing enterprise electricity costs, improving renewable energy consumption, and ensuring safe and stable operation of the power grid.
2023 is widely recognized as the "Year of Industrial and Commercial Energy Storage." Users can effectively utilize peak and valley electricity price differences and other methods to reduce their overall electricity costs. However, traditional energy storage control strategies often employ fixed-time slot models like "one charge, one discharge" or "two charges, two discharges" per day, which are relatively crude and fail to maximize value.
As electricity prices, electricity consumption, and photovoltaic power generation fluctuate in real-time, traditional technologies face challenges in terms of solution efficiency, failing to meet the demands of dynamic and intelligent control strategies, thus hindering the achievement of higher returns.
To address this issue, State Grid Comprehensive Energy has integrated DAMO Academy's optimization solver into the "Tianshu No. 1" smart brain, utilizing its leading linear programming solving capabilities. Combining this technology with its own expertise in user-side "source-grid-load-storage" scenario modeling and mechanism characteristics, the company has developed this dynamic and intelligent optimization solution subsystem, the first of its kind for industrial and commercial energy storage in China.
This subsystem was officially launched recently, significantly improving solution speed and yielding substantial application results. In a real-world application at a factory, facing nearly 30,000 decision variables and hundreds of millions of constraints, this optimization solution subsystem reduced the solution time for charging and discharging strategies from hours to minutes. Based on scenario requirements, the control strategy can be dynamically updated in cycles of 15, 10, 5 minutes or even shorter, enabling multiple application modes such as demand management, peak-valley arbitrage, and photovoltaics-storage-charging coordination. Compared to traditional fixed strategies, the project's overall revenue is increased by up to 30% with the same storage capacity.
Zhu Jian, Chief Technology Officer for the State Grid Corporation of China's Tianshu Platform, said: "'Tianshu No. 1' is China's first comprehensive energy Internet of Things platform capable of simultaneously managing dozens of energy types, millions of 'source-grid-load-storage' devices, and a total capacity exceeding 41GW; it is also State Grid Corporation of China's core technological achievement in empowering user-side comprehensive smart energy development with digitalization. Facing the booming development of new energy and new energy storage industries, State Grid Comprehensive Energy will leverage 'Tianshu No. 1', combined with optimization solutions, AI, and other digital technologies, to provide customers with one-stop products and services, supporting a greener energy transition."
It is worth noting that DAMO Academy has independently developed "MindOpt," a domestic solver with complete functionality and performance that ranks among the world's best. The Academy has also built a mature team dedicated to serving scenario applications in various industries, including cloud computing, supply chain, e-commerce, and finance. DAMO Academy has won first place in the national competition for domestic solvers in the power sector, organized by the Industrial Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
MindOpt 2.0 was recently released, adding support for two types of problems: nonlinear programming (NLP) and mixed integer quadratically constrained programming (MIQCP), expanding coverage to meet demand in more areas like oil, chemical, and biopharmaceutical industries. The 2.0 version is deeply integrated with the self-developed full-process optimization suite, including Tuner, DistRun (distributed computing system), MAPL (high-efficiency self-developed modeling language), and full life-cycle development platform, forming a complete toolkit supporting the optimization ecosystem.
Currently, MindOpt solver offers a community version to academic users for free, and in addition to the download and installation mode, it is the only one in China to provide online development and solution capabilities on a cloud platform, facilitating convenient and rapid access for industries, lowering the barrier to entry.
The collaboration between State Grid Comprehensive Energy and Alibaba DAMO Academy not only injects new vitality into the development of industrial and commercial energy storage but also sets a new benchmark for the application of domestic solvers in the energy sector, further promoting the green energy transition and digital economy development.
