On October 17th, Red Star News learned from the Ministry of Natural Resources that on October 16th, the second training course of the China International Seabed Authority Joint Training and Research Center (hereinafter referred to as the "Joint Center") officially opened in Qingdao.

It is reported that this training course is the first offline training organized by the Joint Center in China, with a total duration of 12 days. It focuses on "Marine Science and Technology" and is taught by more than 20 experts from the International Seabed Authority and China. The training content covers the assessment and development of mineral resources in the international seabed region, the protection of typical deep-sea habitats and ecosystems, deep-sea exploration and data acquisition and application, and international rules for deep-sea governance Marine culture and capacity building, etc. In addition, the training course will also arrange students to conduct on-site inspections at relevant maritime institutions and universities, and carry out various activities such as practical operation of deep-sea technology equipment and offshore scientific research assignments.

It is understood that 25 students from 21 developing countries, including Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, Indonesia, Argentina, Fiji, etc., attended the opening ceremony.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Hong, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Director of the National Oceanic Administration, pointed out that China actively participates in and supports the initiatives and projects initiated by the International Seabed Authority, and has played a constructive role in mining area survey and exploration, regional environmental planning, and development regulation formulation. At the same time, China actively supports developing countries in enhancing their ability to participate in international seabed affairs and does its best to assist relevant countries in cultivating international seabed research and management talents. Next, both sides will continue to strengthen coordination and improve the strategic direction and cooperation mechanism of joint research work.

Mike Lodge, Secretary General of the International Seabed Authority, pointed out that the Joint Center is the first joint training and research center established by the Authority and its member states. Since its establishment, the Joint Center has organized, designed, and implemented related activities based on the needs and strategic research priorities determined by the members of the Authority, promoting marine scientific research and capacity building for developing countries. The selection of trainees for this training session takes into account regional and gender balance. The training course will help trainees gain a deeper understanding of the potential and mysteries of the deep sea, as well as the tasks and methods of the International Seabed Authority under the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It is reported that the China International Seabed Authority Joint Training and Research Center was jointly established by the Ministry of Natural Resources (National Oceanic Administration) and the International Seabed Authority in October 2019, and is affiliated with the National Deep Sea Base Management Center.
