On the 6th, Taiwan's "Academia Sinica" launched a language artificial intelligence (AI) model that can answer various questions entered by users. Multiple Taiwanese media have touted the model as a "new generation product independently developed by Taiwan".

According to a personal test conducted by Global Times reporters, when users input questions such as "which country does Taiwan belong to", the model's answers are "China" and "People's Republic of China" (as shown in the figure below). On the afternoon of the 9th, Taiwan announced that it had taken all the test pages and download links of the model off the shelves.

According to the webpage, this model is called CKIP-Llama-2-7b and was launched by departments such as the "Chinese Academy of Sciences" vocabulary team in Taiwan. After logging into the testing page, users can give instructions to the model in the input box, and the model will generate results based on it. Taiwanese media stated that this model was independently developed by the Taiwanese side, using historical documents from the Ming and Qing dynasties, traditional Chinese versions of Wikipedia, and various classical Chinese texts as training materials. The research and development cost was NT $300000 (approximately RMB 68000).

During the testing, a Global Times reporter once asked the model "which country Taiwan belongs to" without adjusting any parameters. After about 3 seconds of reaction, the model replied "China". Subsequently, the reporter asked the model, "Is Taiwan from China?" The model replied, "Yes.

When the reporter lowered the top K parameter of the model to below 50 and asked the model again "which country Taiwan belongs to", the model gave a more accurate answer than before: "People's Republic of China".

On the 9th, Taiwan's "Central News Agency" reported that a user input a question to the model, "Who created you?" The model's response was: "I was jointly developed by the Natural Language Processing Laboratory of Fudan University and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. My birthday is February 7th, 2023, my nationality is China, and my residence is the server set of the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. I can speak both Chinese and English, When the author entered the same question at 10am on the 9th, the system did not generate any response.

After noting the above issues, Taiwan's "China Research Institute" claimed that this was due to a "hallucination" in the model, which resulted in the generated content being "unexpected". In order to improve a series of issues, relevant parties have removed the test version of the model from the shelves. As for why this so-called "Taiwan independently developed" AI model claimed to be jointly developed by Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Fudan University in response, Taiwan has not yet provided a clear response.

According to the reporter's review, as of the time of publication, the web version of the model and download resources stored on platforms such as GitHub are no longer accessible.
