Today, the 2023 Global Mobile Broadband Forum with the theme of "Bringing 5G-A into Reality" is held in Dubai. At this conference, Huawei's rotating Chairman Hu Houkun and GSMA Director General Mats Granryd engaged in a dialogue on "5G Industry Process and Development". Hu Houkun said, "With the rapid development of technology and the emergence of new demands, mobile network capabilities also need to be continuously upgraded. To this end, we are working hard to bring 5G-A into reality. While maximizing the value of existing investments, we are also preparing for the future

Hu Houkun and MatsGranryd have a conversation online on the MBBF forum

5G achieves leapfrog high-speed development

The two guests unanimously agreed that 5G has achieved significant results in network deployment, user development, consumer business, and industry applications. As of now, over 260 5G networks have been deployed globally, covering nearly half of the population. 5G is the fastest growing intergenerational technology among all, with 4G developing 1 billion users in 6 years and 5G achieving this milestone in just 3 years.

Hu Houkun stated that 5G's consumer oriented business remains the engine of revenue growth for operators. A new consumer behavior represented by video applications has taken shape, and 5G has become the main carrier of mobile network traffic. Traffic management has formed a business cycle. Compared to 4G, the global average growth of 5G network traffic has been 3-5 times, and the ARPU value has increased by 10% to 25%. Meanwhile, one of the biggest changes compared to 4G is that 5G has helped mobile communication networks expand into the industry's market. At present, there are over 50000 applications in the global 5G industry, with over ten million industry connections. Based on rich practice, the industry has identified typical applications of 5G in the industry, such as remote control, video feedback, machine vision, and equipment positioning. These applications meet the common needs of the industry and have been widely applied in fields such as mines, ports, and manufacturing. 5G is driving the digital transformation of the industry, bringing huge business opportunities. By 2030, 5G technology will add nearly $1 trillion in value to the global economy, benefiting all industries, "Mats said.

New capabilities, new models, and new ecology, continuously releasing 5G momentum

Hu Houkun believes that facing consumers, continuously improving network coverage, enhancing user experience, and designing flexible pricing models are key measures for operators to achieve experiential operation and sustained commercial success. Facing the industry, we need to focus on typical applications of 5G and accelerate its large-scale replication in more industries. In this process, operators need to expand their cloud, industry application development, and end-to-end integration capabilities, and seize opportunities for digital transformation in various industries. With the rapid development of technology and the emergence of new demands, mobile network capabilities also need to be constantly upgraded. To this end, we are working hard to bring 5G-A into reality. While maximizing the value of existing investments, we are also preparing for the future, "said Hu Houkun.

In order to promote the construction of a cross industry innovation ecosystem, GSMA has proposed the OpenGateway initiative to help mobile industry developers and cloud service providers collaborate to develop universal network APIs, improve and build new digital services. Mats said, "Currently, this initiative has received support from 240 mobile operators, accounting for 62% of global mobile connectivity. This establishes a deep ecosystem for cross industry innovation and will further unleash the value of 5G." Hu Houkun believes that GSMAOpenGateway can help expand the space of the entire industry, activate the application developer ecosystem, and help 5G achieve better development in the consumer and industry digital markets.
