After 66 conversations, Professor Shenyang from the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University created a science fiction work called "Machine Memory Land" (signed "@ Silicon Zen" during the evaluation) using the AI platform, which won the second prize in the 5th Jiangsu Province Youth Science Popularization Science Fiction Works Competition.

On the noon of October 18th, a reporter from Wuhan Evening News contacted Fu Changyi, the director of the Science Fiction Special Committee of the Jiangsu Science Popularization Writers Association. He stated that in his impression, he had not previously used AI created science fiction works to participate in competitions and win awards, which was the first time. This competition is hosted by the Jiangsu Science Popularization Writers Association and the Jiangsu Science Communication Center, and organized by the Science Fiction Special Committee of the Jiangsu Science Popularization Writers Association. It is a nationwide collection of works.

AI is the English abbreviation for ArtificialIntelligence, which means "artificial intelligence" in Chinese. The reporter reviewed the notice of this competition and found that the selection is divided into two types: popular science graphics and science fiction works. There is no restriction on AI works to participate, but it is clear that the participants are "young people aged 14-45 who are interested in popular science fiction creation", with science fiction works having a word count of no less than 5000 words. Fu Changyi introduced that after learning that Shenyang was trying to create science fiction novels on the AI platform, he mobilized him to participate and give it a try.

If you want to write a short science fiction novel, it will involve the metaverse and humanoid robots. AI can provide a highly innovative and surprising outline that has never appeared in your existing corpus. This is Shenyang's creative requirement for the AI platform.

Shenyang introduced that he used the AI platform to create "The Land of Memory" intermittently for 3 hours. During this period, he had 66 conversations with the AI platform before and after, resulting in a manuscript of over 40000 words, and ultimately copied over 5900 words from it. The protagonist Li Xiao in "Ji Yi Di" is an explorer of the metaverse. She used to be a neuroengineer in the real world, but lost all her memories about her family in an experiment. She developed a strong interest in the legend of the "Land of Memory" and hoped to retrieve her lost memories.

Nearly 200 works were evaluated in this competition, with 6 special awards, 14 first prizes, 18 second prizes, 27 third prizes, and 25 excellent awards. Additionally, 16 excellent organization awards were awarded. The reporter noticed that in the award-winning list announced on October 16th, the author of "The Land of Machine Memory" is "@ Silicon Zen", and the author's unit is "Tsinghua University". This is the only work with an "@" in the author information of the award-winning work.

Before the selection, Fu Changyi did not intentionally tell the judges that the participating work "The Land of Memory" was created by AI, and "I would like to see the judges' evaluation". He revealed that three out of six judges voted for 'The Land of Memory'. According to the selection rules, works approved by 5 judges will receive a special prize, and so on. Works approved by 3 judges will receive a second prize.

Xiao Xinghan, a science fiction writer and vice chairman of the Chongqing Science Popularization Writers Association, was one of the judges for this selection. He did not vote for "The Land of Memory" because "I recognized it as written by AI". He has also been using AI big models recently and has a certain sense of AI style.

Xiao Xinghan stated that this is his first encounter with a science fiction work created by AI. As a judge, he did not recommend this work not only because he identified it as being created using AI, but also because "I think it is not good enough". He said that the biggest problem with novels created by AI now is the lack of emotions.

Shenyang also stated that 'Ji Yi Di' does have shortcomings. Fu Changyi believes that the beginning of "The Land of Memory" is good, but the middle story is not well interpreted. "What is written through artificial intelligence training is still different from what is written by humans." Although this work has won an award, it still does not meet the standards for publication. If it is to be published, further modifications must be made.

Speaking of the award-winning work created using AI, Xiao Xinghan believes that this may be a small ripple that will soon be forgotten in the long river of history, or it may be the first cry that caused an avalanche. From then on, AI literature will become popular, "posing a strong challenge to the survival of writers.

Will similar evaluations be conducted for AI works in the future? Fu Changyi stated that a portion of AI works may be allowed to participate in the selection next year, but it needs to be screened. In the early stage, it is necessary to mark which AI works are, but the judges will still not be told which ones are AI works during the selection.
