 China

According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China's telecommunications revenue reached a cumulative total of 1035.4 billion yuan in the first seven months of this year, representing a year-on-year increase of 3%, a growth rate consistent with the first half of the year. In terms of volume, the total volume of telecommunications services, calculated at constant prices, saw a year-on-year increase of 11.2%.

In terms of specific segments, fixed internet broadband services continue to demonstrate a steady growth trend. In the first seven months, the three major basic telecommunications companies achieved 159.3 billion yuan in revenue from internet broadband services, reflecting a 5.2% year-on-year increase. This segment contributed 15.4% to total telecommunications revenue, representing a 0.1 percentage point increase compared to the first half of the year. It contributed 0.8 percentage points to the total growth of telecommunications revenue.

In contrast, mobile data traffic revenue experienced a slight decrease. In the first seven months, the three major basic telecommunications companies generated 381.7 billion yuan in revenue from mobile data traffic services, indicating a 2.1% year-on-year decline. This segment contributed 36.9% to total telecommunications revenue, representing a 0.2 percentage point increase compared to the first half of the year.

Of particular note is the double-digit growth in revenue from emerging businesses. The three major basic telecommunications companies have actively developed new businesses such as IPTV, Internet data centers, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. In the first seven months, they achieved a combined revenue of 258.4 billion yuan from these emerging businesses, reflecting an 11% year-on-year increase. This segment contributed 25% to total telecommunications revenue, driving 2.5 percentage points of growth in telecommunications revenue. Among these, cloud computing and big data revenues grew by 13.1% and 62% year-on-year respectively, while Internet of Things revenue increased by 12.2% year-on-year.

Traditional mobile voice services, on the other hand, saw continued decline in revenue. In the first seven months, the three major basic telecommunications companies generated 11.24 billion yuan and 641.5 billion yuan in revenue from fixed and mobile voice services, respectively, reflecting a 1% increase and 3.5% decrease year-on-year. Together, they contributed 7.3% to total telecommunications revenue, a year-on-year decline of 0.4 percentage points.

Overall, despite the decline in mobile data traffic revenue, robust growth in fixed broadband services and emerging businesses effectively offset the decline in traditional services, driving steady growth in telecommunications revenue. This also indicates that with the accelerating pace of digital transformation, the telecommunications industry is actively embracing new technologies, exploring new growth areas, and injecting new vitality into economic and social development.
