I have cable TV installed in my old house, which I've lived in for 20-30 years. It started with analog TV, but around 2007, it was upgraded to digital. I had been paying for it, but after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I started staying there less frequently and stopped renewing the cable TV subscription. Whenever I wanted to watch TV, I switched to online streaming. My cable set-top box was tucked away in a drawer and gathering dust. I haven't used cable TV since the Olympics.

Recently, I learned about a new policy from the broadcasting authority. I went back to my old house and turned on the TV to see what's going on. The TV is an old analog model and doesn't support digital signals, requiring a cable set-top box to function. I hooked up the 18-year-old relic, turned it on, and to my surprise, after 15 years of gathering dust, the set-top box booted up perfectly. The quality is truly exceptional. After a channel search, 104 channels were found, with about 60 viewable, and the rest encrypted. All the local, provincial, satellite, and CCTV channels are available, totaling more than 60.

The channel search indicated that the set-top box was manufactured in November 2006, an 18-year-old product with only a coaxial video output. The picture quality is far inferior to newer TVs with direct digital decoding.
