SHEIN's 2024 Sustainability Report: Significant Increase in Recycled Plastic Bag Usage and Carbon Reduction
SHEIN's 2024 Sustainability Report reveals that the company saved over 6,700 tons of virgin plastic and reduced carbon emissions by more than 21,000 tons throughout the year by using recycled plastic bags. This achievement is attributed to SHEIN's ongoing recycled plastic packaging replacement initiative, launched in 2022, and its efforts in packaging reduction.
The report states that since July 2022, SHEIN has incorporated plastic bags containing 50% recycled polyethylene (rPE) and certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) into its shipping bags. This initiative proved highly effective in 2024, with 52.2% of all shipping bags utilizing this eco-friendly material. Simultaneously, since August 2022, SHEIN has used GRS-certified bags made from 100% recycled polyethylene in its garment bags. This now covers its namesake brand, as well as select lines and brands like SHEINX, evoluSHEIN, and MOTF. The raw materials for these recycled plastic bags are post-consumer recycled polyethylene.
Compared to traditional virgin plastic packaging bags, using recycled polyethylene offers significant environmental benefits. It reduces the production of new plastic, lowering resource extraction, energy consumption, and ultimately, negative environmental impact. The application of recycled polyethylene not only reflects SHEIN's commitment to environmental protection but also provides new ideas and practices for sustainable development in the apparel industry.
Beyond the adoption of recycled materials, SHEIN continues to invest in packaging reduction. To minimize plastic use, SHEIN launched a "slimming" initiative for garment packaging bags in 2023. In 2023, the average garment bag was reduced by 1.34 grams; in 2024, this was further improved by another 0.99 grams per bag. SHEIN also launched a similar initiative for shipping bags in 2024, reducing the weight of each bag by 4.37 grams compared to 2023. While these reductions may seem small individually, their cumulative effect contributes significantly to environmental protection.
SHEIN's sustainable development philosophy extends beyond packaging. From raw material selection and manufacturing to logistics, delivery, and product recycling, SHEIN actively promotes green and sustainable strategies throughout its entire product lifecycle, aiming to drive industry transformation and upgrading.
SHEIN's agile "small-batch, fast-response" supply chain model and digital tools represent a business model innovation. This model effectively reduces waste in production and leads the apparel industry's digital transformation and integration into the industrial internet, offering a new direction for industry-wide sustainable development.
To further promote sustainable supply chain development, SHEIN plans to invest 500 million yuan (approximately $68 million USD) over the next five years. This investment will focus on technological innovation, training support, factory expansion, and supplier community initiatives to comprehensively improve the digitalization, lean management, and green capabilities of its upstream and downstream suppliers. SHEIN has already invested 250 million yuan (approximately $34 million USD) in these supplier empowerment projects over the past two years.
SHEIN's 2024 Sustainability Report clearly demonstrates its efforts and achievements in environmental protection. By adopting recycled plastic packaging, actively promoting packaging reduction, and driving green transformation and upgrading across its entire supply chain, SHEIN sets an example for sustainable development in the apparel industry. The report's data also proves SHEIN's significant effectiveness in reducing plastic use and carbon emissions. This is not only a positive contribution to the environment but also showcases SHEIN's corporate social responsibility. These efforts benefit the environment and build a solid foundation for the company's sustainable development, harmonizing corporate value with social responsibility. SHEIN's practices are worthy of learning and emulation by other companies to drive the apparel industry towards a greener and more sustainable future. Continuous improvement, innovation, and commitment to social responsibility will be the core driving forces behind SHEIN's future sustainable development strategy. Through continued efforts, SHEIN will further reduce its environmental footprint and contribute to building a better future. SHEIN's experience shows that companies can actively assume environmental responsibility and achieve sustainable development goals while pursuing commercial success. This is not only the responsibility of businesses but also a requirement of the times. SHEIN's practices provide valuable experience and lessons for other companies, making a positive contribution to driving the sustainable development of the entire industry.
