The construction of Cuihu Wetland Park began in 2003 and was approved by the Ministry of Construction to become a national level urban wetland park two years later. It was fully completed in September 2013, and some areas are open to the public for free reservation.

For many years, Cuihu has been committed to wetland protection and restoration. By promoting a series of measures such as biodiversity conservation, water conservation, and ecosystem monitoring, the ecological function of the wetland has been further improved. The variety and quantity of wild animals and plants have increased year by year, and the wetland landscape has significantly improved, basically reproducing the original ecology of Beijing's wetlands.

At the beginning of the opening of Cuihu Wetland Park, 174 species of birds were observed. Nowadays, 287 species of birds have been observed in Cuihu, including 14 species of national first-class protected birds, such as the white necked crane, black stork, and yellow breasted bunting. There are 51 species of national second-class protected birds, such as the Hualian duck, white spoonbill, osprey, and the Sinian bird. It is the largest natural breeding ground for geese, herons, and ordinary cormorants in the urban area of Beijing.

At the beginning of the opening of Cuihu Wetland Park, there were a total of 330 species of higher plants, but now this number has increased to 534, an increase of over 60% compared to 10 years ago. There are also 16 species of fish found here, including yellow weasels, Mongolian rabbits, Northeast hedgehogs, Chinese toads, northern narrow mouthed frogs, black spotted side folded frogs, golden line side folded frogs, Chifeng brocade snakes, white striped brocade snakes, red chain snakes, amphibians and reptiles, as well as rod fish, river sand pond snakehead, high bodied fish, red finned native fish, brown snouted goberfish, beaked fish, Wusu bagrid, and small yellow croaker, Together, it forms a complete and healthy wetland ecosystem of Cuihu Lake.
