These corals originally grew in the surrounding waters of the Yangpu Port expansion project. Yangpu Port is located in the center of the Beibu Gulf and is also the center of the Singapore Hong Kong Shanghai Osaka international shipping route, serving as a strategic fulcrum of the Maritime Silk Road.

In January of this year, the expansion project of Yangpu Port was launched. What about the coral reefs in the sea area after the expansion of the port? Move a house for the coral in Yangpu Port!

Beautiful corals may seem sturdy, but they are actually very fragile and sensitive to the environment. The natural restoration process of coral reefs is long and difficult, some even taking hundreds of years. At present, the industry generally adopts a combination of natural and artificial restoration methods.

The Shenzhen Research Institute of Guangdong Ocean University (hereinafter referred to as "Shenzhen Research Institute") has been introduced as a technical unit to carry out restoration work such as the production and placement of artificial coral reefs and nurseries, coral migration planting, and online detection and layout of coral reefs.

The bottom of the coral plunges deeply into the reef, requiring staff to dive into the sea, use tools such as wire saws to separate the bottom of the coral from the reef, and then immediately transplant it to the "new home". If you leave the seawater for too long, it will cause irreparable damage to the coral.

The staff told reporters that they have improved and improved on the original flying saucer shaped artificial coral reef, designed and produced new artificial coral reefs, and carried out point-to-point precise deployment in natural waters.

The project team found that smaller corals can be fixed and planted using underwater coral adhesive. However, for corals larger than 20 centimeters in size, due to the time required for the adhesive to solidify and harden, and the strong sea currents in the immigration area, relying solely on the adhesive for bonding will greatly reduce the fixation effect. "Miao Zhiyuan, the head of Shenzhen Research Institute, told reporters that the project team conducted repeated experiments in the sea area, Finally, it was found that the combination of adhesive and reef drilling fixation can effectively improve the stability of coral cultivation.

After the transplantation was completed, the project team also installed a set of underwater monitoring systems in the coral migration and planting areas, which can view the growth status of coral reefs in real time, obtain data such as temperature, salinity, turbidity, etc. in the sea area near the coral reefs, and analyze them.

As of now, Shenzhen Research Institute has migrated over 70000 coral species, replanted over 21000 reef building coral species, and produced and placed 902 artificial coral reefs and 10 coral temporary nurseries.

Gorgeous corals bloom quietly on the seabed. This beautiful migration is a green win-win situation that balances economic development and ecological protection.
