After decades of railway construction, multiple railway channels have been built between the two places, including two high-speed railway channels. The difficulty of the Shu Road has become history. However, many people lament that the best route has been wasted, and the passage time between the two places cannot be further shortened in the future.

Is that really the case? Next, let's review the transformation process of the railway between the two places and explore the truth of the matter.

The era of ordinary railways

  • Go north to the Qinling Mountains

In January 1958, the Baocheng Railway was officially put into operation. The total length from Chengdu Station to Baoji Station is 669 kilometers.

With the addition of the 684 kilometers of the Baoji Zhengzhou section of the Longhai Railway, which has already been open to traffic, the first railway line between Chengdu and Zhengzhou has been formed. The total length is 1353 kilometers, with a single track and an average speed of only about 40 kilometers per hour. The entire journey takes about 34 hours.

In July 1975, the entire Baocheng Railway completed electrification renovation, becoming the first electrified railway in China.

In December 1986, the Baoji Zhengzhou section of the Longhai Railway completed double track and electrification renovation, with a maximum speed of 140 kilometers per hour.

In November 1998, the Chengdu Yangpingguan section of the Baocheng Railway completed the double track renovation. The top speed reaches 80 kilometers per hour.

At this point, the average speed of the line reaches about 60 kilometers per hour. The entire process time has decreased to about 23 hours. At present, there is only one pair of trains left in operation, with a ticket price of 168.5 yuan for hard seats and 288.5 yuan for hard sleepers:

  • Dongchu Yangping Pass

In June 1970, the Jiaozhi Railway (northern section of Jiaoliu Railway) was completed and opened to traffic. The total length from Xiangyang Station to Luoyang East Station is 380 kilometers.

In April 1978, the electrification of the Yang'an Railway was completed and it was officially put into operation. The total length from Yangping Station to Ankang Station is 357 kilometers.

In June 1978, the Xiangyu Railway was put into use. The total length from Ankang Station to Xiangyang Station is 368 kilometers.

With the addition of 398 kilometers from Chengdu Station to Yangpingguan Station on the Baocheng Railway and 119 kilometers from Luoyang East Station to Zhengzhou Station on the Longhai Railway, a new line has emerged between Chengdu and Zhengzhou. The total length is 1622 kilometers, with an average speed of about 45 kilometers per hour, and the entire journey takes about 36 hours.

In November 2009, the electrification renovation and second line construction of the Xiangyu Railway were completed, with a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

In December 2009, the Jiaozhi Railway completed double track and electrification renovation, with a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

On December 27, 2019, the construction of the second line of the Yang'an Railway was completed, with a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

At this point, the average speed of the line reached about 65 kilometers per hour. The entire process time has decreased to about 25 hours. At present, there are three pairs of trains in operation, with ticket prices of 192 yuan for hard seats and 328 yuan for hard sleepers:

K206/5: 25 hours, 56 minutes, 23 hours, 18 minutes

K258/7: 24 hours, 36 minutes, 23 hours, 39 minutes

K284/3: Time taken: 24 hours, 12 minutes, 23 hours, 27 minutes


  • By way of Dazhou

In January 1998, the railway was put into operation. The total length from Chengdu Station to Dazhou Station is 374 kilometers.

In July 2009, the Dazhou Railway completed the double track expansion and renovation, with a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

Adding 649 kilometers from Dazhou Station to Xiangyang Station on the Xiangyu Railway, 380 kilometers from Xiangyang Station to Luoyang East Station on the Jiaozhi Railway, and 119 kilometers from Luoyang East Station to Zhengzhou Station on the Longhai Railway, this new line crosses Daba Mountain. The total length is 1522 kilometers, with an average speed of about 75 kilometers per hour, and the entire journey takes about 20 hours.

At present, there is still one pair of trains in operation, with a ticket price of 198.5 yuan for hard seats and 347.5 yuan for hard sleepers:

  • Crossing Xi'an without entering

In October 2001, the Xikang Railway was completed and opened to traffic. The total length from Ankang Station to Xi'an Station is 268 kilometers.

On October 30, 2013, the construction of the second line of the Xikang Railway was completed. The top speed reaches 160 kilometers per hour.

As a result, two new routes emerged through Xi'an:

The first route is to Dazhou, including 374 kilometers from Chengdu Station to Dazhou Station on the Dazhou Railway, 281 kilometers from Dazhou Station to Ankang on the Xiangyu Railway, and 511 kilometers from Xi'an Station to Zhengzhou Station on the Longhai Railway. The total length is 1434 kilometers, with an average speed of about 80 kilometers per hour, and the entire journey takes about 18 hours. At present, there are only two pairs of trains in operation, both priced at 187.5 yuan for hard seats and 328.5 yuan for hard sleepers:

K386/5: 19 hours and 4 minutes/19 hours and 6 minutes

K818/7: 16 hours 56 minutes/19 hours 4 minutes

The second route is Yangpingguan, which includes 398 kilometers from Chengdu Station to Yangpingguan Station on the Baocheng Railway, 357 kilometers from Yangping Station to Ankang Station on the Yang'an Railway, and 511 kilometers from Xi'an Station to Zhengzhou Station on the Longhai Railway. The total length of the route is 1534 kilometers, with an average speed of about 70 kilometers per hour and a time consumption of about 22 hours. At present, there is only one pair of trains in operation, with ticket prices of 180.5 yuan for hard seats and 310.5 yuan for hard sleepers:

K292/1: 23 hours, 41 minutes, 20 hours, 53 minutes

Interestingly, neither of the above two lines stops in Xi'an. The reason is that whether the Xikang Railway stops at Xi'an Station or Xi'an North Station, it has to make a significant detour, increasing the burden on the Xi'an hub. After the completion of Xi'an East Station in the future, this problem should be solved.


  • Bypass Wuhan

In April 2001, the Beijing Guangzhou Railway from Hankou Station to Zhengzhou Station completed double track and electrification renovation, reaching a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour and a total length of 513 kilometers.

On January 1, 2015, the section from Chengdu East Station to Hankou Station of the Ningrong Railway was fully put into operation, reaching a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour (some sections of 160 kilometers), with a total length of 1149 kilometers.

  • Xicheng High Speed Railway

On September 28, 2012, the Zhengxi high-speed railway was put into operation, with a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour (operating speed of 310 kilometers per hour). The total length from Xi'an North Station to Zhengzhou East Station is 523 kilometers.

On November 28, 2016, the Chongqing Wancheng Intercity Railway (Zhengzhou Chongqing High Speed Railway Wanyu Section) was put into operation, with a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour. The total length from Chongqing North Station to @ Wanzhou North Station is 245 kilometers.

On June 20, 2022, the entire Zhengwan high-speed railway (Zhengwan section of the Zhengyu high-speed railway) was put into operation, with a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour (operating speed of 310 kilometers per hour). The total length from Wanzhou North Station to Zhengzhou East Station is 862 kilometers.

The total length is 1426 kilometers, and the theoretical time is 4 hours and 49 minutes. The current operating trains include:

G prefix (5 pairs such as G1475/7): It takes 6 hours and 27 minutes to 8 hours and 8 minutes.

The pricing standard used (second class seats, the same below) is: 0.50-0.55 yuan/kilometer for the Chengdu Chongqing and Zhengzhou Wanzhou high-speed trains; The price for the Chongqing Wancheng Intercity Railway is 0.40 yuan/kilometer. The full fare is 677-731 yuan.
