On October 21, Nanchang, China News Agency (Xinhua) (Reporter Wu Pengquan) As a master of the new generation of information technology, VR (virtual reality) has become an important representative of advanced productivity and new economic growth points, accelerating the empowerment of thousands of industries. How can China's VR industry achieve high-quality development in the face of unprecedented development opportunities?

From the 19th to the 20th, the 2023 World VR Industry Conference, with the theme of "VR makes the world more exciting - virtual and real integration, intelligent revitalization of all industries", was held in Nanchang, Jiangxi. Experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs from both domestic and foreign VR fields focused on cutting-edge technologies, the latest achievements, and hot applications in the industry, exploring industry development trends and solutions.

Accelerate breakthroughs in key VR technologies

Wearing AR glasses to "travel through time and space" and engage in dialogue with historical and cultural celebrities, creating a "black light factory" with AI visual technology, and generating cartoon image VR postcards through real-time holographic cabin shooting... At the World VR Industry and Metaverse Expo, nearly 200 enterprises such as Huawei, iFlytek, and Xiaomi made a concentrated appearance with the latest achievements and products.

In recent years, with the accelerated integration of VR with technological systems such as 5G and artificial intelligence, various VR products such as all-in-one machines, headsets, and mobile devices have flourished. Zhang Li, President of China Electronics Information Industry Development Research Institute and Vice Chairman of the Virtual Reality Industry Alliance, revealed that the shipment volume of AR glasses in the domestic market in the second quarter of this year was 46000 units, a year-on-year increase of 64%.

On the VR track, many domestic and foreign economies and technology giants have focused on the trend of technological development and demonstrated "eighteen types of martial arts". For example, Apple has launched VR/AR head display VisionPro, Meta has released MR head display Quest3, and TCL Huaxing has developed LTPO-VR technology

In the view of Yu Yingtao, Chairman of Ziguang Group and President of Xinhua Third Group, currently, foreign companies such as Microsoft and Apple are leading in VR technology. On the basis of immersing themselves in the construction of the world, Chinese local enterprises should focus on breakthroughs in systemic interaction; Accelerate the layout of brain computer interfaces based on the addition of external components to the head.

With the increase in production capacity of silicon-based OLEDs, there is still huge room for improvement in near eye display brightness and pixel density. Zhang Li suggests consolidating the technological foundation for high-quality development of the industry, strengthening technological innovation, and continuously improving the core competitiveness of the industry.

Promote large-scale application in key areas

At the exhibition booth of Nanchang Xiaohetao Technology Co., Ltd. at the above-mentioned exhibition, the digital virtual character "Wang Bo" scored the audience's memorized "Preface to Tengwang Pavilion". We cooperate with scenic spots such as Tengwang Pavilion and Yueyang Tower to enrich new scenarios of VR technology and deep integration of culture and tourism, "said Wang Yixiang, an employee of the company.

The development of emerging technologies cannot be separated from the implementation of industry applications. The Chinese VR industry has initially built an ecosystem based on technological innovation and is entering a strategic window period with product upgrading and integrated application as the main focus.

Last October, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the State Administration of Radio and Television, and the State Administration of Sport, issued the "Action Plan for the Integration and Development of Virtual Reality and Industry Applications (2022-2026)", proposing five major tasks for the integration and development of virtual reality and industry applications.

Yu Yingtao believes that on the basis of the current laid out application scenarios, it is necessary to focus again on fields such as education, healthcare, transportation, and financial services, explore more virtual scene applications that are suitable for various industries, promote the transformation of digital from two-dimensional to multi-dimensional, and accelerate the upgrading of digital scenes.

Xu Xiaolan, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, pointed out that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will deepen industry application demonstration, create replicable and easy to promote VR application cases, and accelerate the large-scale application of VR in key fields such as industrial production, cultural tourism, integrated media, sports and health.

Cultivate and strengthen VR leading enterprises

With the continuous implementation of industry applications, the market size of China's VR industry is also rapidly expanding.

Five departments including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China have previously proposed that by 2026, the overall scale of the VR industry (including related hardware, software, applications, etc.) will exceed 350 billion yuan.

The driving role of leading enterprises in industrial development is self-evident. Zhang Li stated that we need to accelerate the cultivation of a group of leading enterprises with strong industrial ecological leadership, high innovation level, and outstanding core competitiveness, and promote the integrated development of large, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Xu Xiaolan also mentioned that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will accelerate the development of VR industry agglomeration, cultivate VR leading enterprises and "specialized, refined, and innovative" small and medium-sized enterprises with leading and driving effects.

In recent years, the overall revenue scale of China's top 50 VR enterprises has steadily increased. In 2021, the proportion of enterprises with annual sales exceeding 100 million yuan exceeded 50% for the first time, increased to 28 in 2022, and reached 34 in 2023.

The VR industry in China is thriving and has unlimited market potential, "said Sarah Shahner, Chairman of the World XR Association.
