On November 10th, according to foreign media, Apple has agreed to pay a settlement fee of $1.8 million to compensate consumers who purchased eligible gift cards between March 2018 and July 2020 but were unable to redeem them due to theft and unauthorized use. Previously, Apple received a lawsuit accusing it of insufficient security features in its gift cards.

The plaintiff Rachel Shay stated that she purchased a gift card on her son's birthday, but there was no balance on the card because a third party intercepted the funds in the card. She believes that Apple has failed to take reasonable measures to properly protect its physical gift cards.

It is reported that the settlement agreement also applies to some consumers in California who purchased gift cards between May 2017 and February 2018. The funds in the cards were also intercepted by a third party and were refused refunds or replacements by Apple.

Consumers believe that Apple should inform customers in advance of potential theft risks and take additional measures to protect their gift cards.

Currently, Apple has agreed to compensate for purchasing eligible gift cards between March 2018 and July 2020. In addition, to obtain settlement benefits, the collective plaintiff should submit a valid claim form before January 17, 2024.
