Is It Necessary to Build the Chengdu-Yibin High-Speed Rail with the Existing Chengdu-Guiyang High-Speed Rail?

Chengdu and Chongqing are the core cities of the Chengdu-Chongqing metropolitan area, one of China's four major urban agglomerations. Due to historical and geographical factors, the cities in the Sichuan Basin are naturally "siphoned" by the two municipalities. If the Chengdu-Yibin High-Speed Rail (Chengyi High-Speed Rail) is not built, Chengdu will find it difficult to compete with Chongqing.
There are at least four reasons for Chengdu to build the Chengyi High-Speed Rail:
1. Enhance Exchanges with Southern Sichuan Region
Chongqing-led construction of the Chongqing-Kunming High-Speed Rail (Chongkun High-Speed Rail) will pass through southern Sichuan. Once the Chongkun High-Speed Rail is operational, it will become convenient for cities like Luzhou, Zigong, and Yibin in southern Sichuan to travel to Chongqing.
To offset Chongqing's influence on southern Sichuan, Chengdu needs to build another high-speed rail to the region.
2. Enhance Exchanges with Yunnan Province
Due to the vastness and sparsely populated nature of the Hengduan Mountains, it is uneconomical to build a high-speed rail directly from Chengdu to Yunnan. Therefore, it can only share a high-speed rail channel with Chongqing. However, this channel has already been taken by Chongqing.
The Chengdu-Guiyang High-Speed Rail (Chenggui High-Speed Rail) has a design speed of only 250km/h, so connecting directly to the Chongkun High-Speed Rail with a speed of 350km/h will not be very useful. In order to better compete with Chongqing for Yunnan, Chengdu can only build another high-speed rail to connect to the Chongkun High-Speed Rail.
3. Strengthening Internal Exchanges within Southern Sichuan
Yibin and Luzhou are known as the "Wine City" and "Salt City" respectively, while Zigong is the "Salt City" and Neijiang is the "Sweet City." They are all cities with great potential for economic development in Sichuan.
Through the "V"-shaped high-speed rails, the Chengyi High-Speed Rail and the Mianlu High-Speed Rail, a "half-hour economic circle" will be formed in southern Sichuan, enhancing cultural exchange and trade and logistics within the region.
4. Improve Transportation to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport
Tianfu Airport is located more than 50 kilometers away from the city center in a straight line, and the speed of Metro Line 18 is not fast enough. Chengdu can take advantage of the construction of the Chengyi High-Speed Rail to introduce intercity railways to Tianfu Airport, making it more convenient to travel to the airport from Chengdu's urban area and the Tianfu New Area.
In addition, through the Chengyi High-Speed Rail, the coverage of Tianfu Airport will be expanded to southern Sichuan.
Benefits of the Chengyi High-Speed Rail
After the Chengyi High-Speed Rail is operational, Sichuan will form the first "high-speed rail ring":
- The Chenggui High-Speed Rail in the west will pass through Meishan, Leshan, and arrive in Yibin.
- The Chengyi High-Speed Rail in the east will pass through Ziyang, Neijiang, Zigong, and arrive in Yibin.
- The three cities of Ziyang, Zigong, and Yibin will enter the "dual high-speed rail" era, while Neijiang will enter the "triple high-speed rail" era.
Only a populous and financially strong province like Sichuan can achieve such an accomplishment.
The construction of the Chengyi High-Speed Rail is of great significance to Chengdu's economic development and its competition with Chongqing. It will not only enhance Chengdu's connection with southern Sichuan and Yunnan, but also strengthen the internal exchanges within southern Sichuan and improve transportation to Tianfu International Airport. Therefore, it is highly necessary to build the Chengyi High-Speed Rail.
