On July 17th, Shanghai Metro announced its full support for Hong Kong's digital wallet, AlipayHK, allowing users to "ride with a single code". This marks the first time Shanghai Metro has integrated with an overseas electronic wallet, providing Hong Kong tourists with convenient "one-code access" for their rides.

Leveraging Ant Group's innovative Alipay+ cross-border digital payment solution, Hong Kong tourists can now use AlipayHK on their mobile phones to scan the QR code at the turnstiles on all 20 Shanghai Metro lines (including the Maglev line), enjoying a seamless travel experience.

Shanghai Metro officials stated that AlipayHK is the first overseas payment tool to enable direct QR code scanning for metro rides in Shanghai, introducing a new convenient payment method for Shanghai Metro users. This collaboration not only provides Hong Kong tourists with more convenient travel options but also showcases Shanghai Metro's commitment to improving service levels and internationalization.

AlipayHK: A New Choice for Hong Kong Users' Travel

Previously, Hong Kong users could utilize AlipayHK to pay for travel on over 90% of Hong Kong's public transportation. They could also use Alipay+ cross-border services to board buses in Guangzhou, Zhongshan, and Foshan, as well as ride the Shenzhen Metro, purchase nationwide train tickets, and use Gaode Maps for ride-hailing services within the Greater Bay Area.

Before the Chinese New Year, Alipay+ services helped AlipayHK expand beyond the Greater Bay Area, collaborating with Shanghai Jiushi Group's transportation card company to launch the "Shanghai Public Transportation Riding Code" service. This solved the problem of Hong Kong tourists using public transportation in Shanghai, allowing them to seamlessly navigate buses, ferries, Songjiang trams, and Jinshan Railway in the city.

This latest integration with Shanghai Metro further expands the travel options for Hong Kong tourists in Shanghai, enabling more people to effortlessly explore the city's attractions.

Alipay+: Facilitating Cross-border Payment Convenience

With support and guidance from the People's Bank of China and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, Ant Group has partnered with various organizations to develop two solutions: "Foreign Card Domestic Binding" (downloading Alipay and binding overseas bank cards) and "Foreign Package Domestic Use" (utilizing Alipay+ services to allow overseas wallets to directly scan and pay in China). These solutions offer a more convenient payment experience for overseas users.

Looking Ahead: More Convenient Cross-border Payments

Shanghai Metro expressed its hope that more mobile payment methods from other countries and regions will be integrated into Shanghai Metro in the future, allowing more international tourists to enjoy convenient "one-code access" to the metro service. This would further enhance Shanghai's international standing and provide travelers with a more efficient travel experience.

Shanghai Metro's full support for AlipayHK is a significant milestone in the upgrade of its services and another major achievement in cross-border collaboration in China's mobile payment sector. It provides new inspiration and guidance for future cross-border payment partnerships. With technological advancements and deepening collaborations, we can expect more countries and regions to integrate their mobile payment methods into China, delivering more convenient cross-border payment experiences for a wider range of users.
