Root servers are the cornerstones of the internet world. They act as central nervous systems, converting domain names into IP addresses, ensuring users can access the correct websites. This seemingly simple operation is an indispensable part of the internet's smooth functioning. There are 13 root servers globally, their distribution and control directly affect each country's position and interests in the international internet structure.
Given that the US is the birthplace of the internet, most root servers are located in the US, with 10 of them under American control. This distribution pattern, to some extent, reflects the history of the internet's origin and development, but it has also raised concerns about internet governance inequality within the international community.
China, the country with the most internet users worldwide, was once without its own root servers. This, to some extent, affected China's network security and information sovereignty, creating dependence on external root servers. To counter this challenge, China actively explored establishing its own root server mirrors or alternative solutions, achieving significant results.
In recent years, China successfully developed and deployed four IPv6 root servers through the "Snowman Project," marking a major breakthrough in next-generation internet root server technology. The IPv6 protocol, with its 128-bit address space, resolves the IPv4 address exhaustion issue and provides robust support for constructing a more secure, stable, and efficient global internet infrastructure.
The deployment of these IPv6 root servers not only enhanced China's technological autonomy in the internet sphere but also significantly boosted its position and influence in international internet governance. These root servers allow China to achieve rapid responses and effective management of domestic network traffic, significantly improving network access speed and stability while also providing a more secure and reliable network environment for domestic internet companies.
The "Snowman Project" showcases Chinas autonomous innovation capacity in next-generation internet technology development. It also lays a solid foundation for China to play a more active role in global internet governance.
