According to a report by the South China Morning Post on August 27, China's domestically produced C919 aircraft is set to achieve a production milestone as its manufacturer, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), will deliver the narrow-body jet to three airlines on August 28. This marks a crucial moment in the delivery history of the C919, signifying a breakthrough in China's civil aviation industry in the realm of domestically produced aircraft and indicating a significant enhancement in COMAC's production capacity.

 Deliveries of China

The airlines receiving the aircraft are Air China, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines. Air China and China Southern Airlines will be receiving their first C919s on the 28th, while China Eastern Airlines will continue to receive its previously ordered C919s. These three airlines are major domestic carriers in China, and their adoption of the C919 will further promote the use and application of domestically produced aircraft.

The C919 is a competitor to the bestselling narrow-body aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, and its research and development is a significant achievement for China's civil aviation industry. The C919 has achieved international standards in safety and comfort, and boasts excellent performance and cost-effectiveness, showcasing strong competitiveness in the domestic market.

In April this year, Air China and China Southern Airlines each agreed to purchase 100 C919s, with deliveries scheduled between 2024 and 2031. Previously, Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines was the only airline operating the C919.

Aviation analyst Li Hanming (transliteration) said: COMAC delivering the C919 to three customers within a month reflects its growing capability in addressing production bottlenecks, coordinating with regulators, multiple suppliers, and buyers, and turning around quickly between orders and deliveries.

As Western aircraft manufacturers' dominance is challenged, COMAC is seeking to establish itself in the world's second-largest aviation market. Li Hanming pointed out: "With a growing backlog, scaling up production is a necessity. It is even more important than obtaining Western airworthiness certificates."

COMAC has expressed optimism about obtaining an airworthiness certificate from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Currently, COMAC has commenced construction of a second assembly line in Shanghai to meet the growing demand.

The accelerated delivery of the C919 not only reflects COMAC's enhanced production capacity but also signifies China's civil aviation industry's advancement towards high-end manufacturing. In the future, as the C919 is promoted and applied in the domestic market and expands into international markets, China's domestically produced aircraft will exert greater influence on the global aviation market and provide stronger support for China's civil aviation industry.
