A Journey Through a Century of Science: A Review of the "Centennial Societies Talk about the Frontier" Science Communication Report Event

To showcase the charm of science and technology, inspire innovation confidence, and cultivate a culture of innovation, a science communication report event named "Centennial Societies Talk about the Frontier" was grandly held at the National Science and Technology Communication Center on September 20th. This event was a highlight of the 2024 National Science Communication Day, aiming to review the glorious history of scientific exploration by societies over the past century and look forward to the cutting edge of global science and technology. The event, themed "Crossing a Century of Science, Predicting the Future," invited Ren Qilong, Vice President of the Chinese Chemical Society and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen Kaixian, Honorary President of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Society and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Xie Chuanxiao, researcher, director of the Crop Gene Editing Center, and doctoral supervisor at the Institute of Crop Science of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, recommended by the Chinese Agricultural Society, to engage in in-depth dialogue and exchange around four chapters.

Through a series of old photographs of the societies, the event highlighted the intertwined relationship between the development of societies over the past century and the destiny of the nation, as well as their outstanding contributions to promoting technological innovation in various fields. Centennial societies record the history of the development of the national science and technology cause, inherit the scientific spirit of diligent study, and also promote the spirit of scientists rooted in patriotism.

Chapter Two: Predicting | The Tide of Intelligence

This chapter focused on hot topics in the field of biotechnology, such as gene technology, cell therapy, and synthetic biology, providing in-depth interpretations. Academician Ren Qilong used "cell factories" as an example to explain the advantages of biomanufacturing technology and the landmark achievements of the green chemical industry. Academician Chen Kaixian, on the other hand, used "cell therapy" to depict the application scenarios of emerging technologies and their impact on human health management and disease prevention methods. Researcher Xie Chuanxiao presented a detailed introduction to the development of genetically modified crops and how these technologies provide strong support for global food security, showcasing a grand vision of gene editing technologies assisting agricultural modernization.

Chapter Three: Collision | Integration and Co-creation

This chapter focused on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, discussing cutting-edge technological fields such as synthetic biology, artificial intelligence, and large models, sharing numerous successful collaboration cases in conjunction with the commonalities between pharmacy, chemical engineering, and agricultural sciences. Academician Chen Kaixian proposed that intelligent drugs are a new paradigm for the construction of a new pharmaceutical discipline in the new era, emphasizing the role of interdisciplinary integration in promoting scientific research innovation. Academician Ren Qilong and Researcher Xie Chuanxiao also shared successful cases of interdisciplinary collaboration in their respective fields. Interdisciplinary collaboration not only helps to break through the boundaries of traditional disciplines, fostering new research directions and growth points, but also promotes innovation in talent development models, injecting continuous vitality into scientific research.

Chapter Four: Imagining | Predicting the Future

In this chapter, the event included a "Youth Dialogue" segment where young science and technology professionals from various fields actively asked questions and had one-on-one conversations with academicians. They either sought guidance on professional academic issues or discussed their scientific research ideas and dilemmas, expressing their in-depth thinking on scientific innovation and industry development. The academicians and experts present offered sincere affirmation of the young people's contributions and expressed their expectations for the future.

This dialogue meeting was organized by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology's Society Service Center and supported by organizations including the Chinese Chemical Society, the Chinese Pharmaceutical Society, and the Chinese Agricultural Society. Related officials from the Science Popularization Department and the Society Service Center of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, along with more than 80 young science and technology professionals, witnessed this dialogue meeting on the inheritance and innovation of scientific spirit.
