Huawei P40 Pro One-Week Review: Worth Buying?

As a long-time Huawei phone user, from Honor 3 to P40 Pro, I've experienced the various changes in Huawei phones. This time, I got my hands on the P40 Pro and have been using it for a week. Today, I'd like to share my honest thoughts with you.

1. Design: Beauty and Feel Combined

The P40 Pro adopts a four-curved screen design, with curved edges on all four sides. Compared to a straight screen, the grip is more comfortable and doesn't feel sharp on the edges. The frame also has a curved design, seamlessly blending with the screen, creating a sleek and round visual effect. Additionally, the Pro version's camera design is unique, resembling a weather vane, making it highly recognizable. However, due to the large main camera lens, it needs extra attention to prevent your fingernails from scratching the lens. To avoid this, I even changed my grip. Overall, the P40 Pro's design is excellent, and the Rolland Purple color scheme is absolutely stunning.

2. Heat Issue: Within Acceptable Limits

Many users have reported that the P40 Pro gets hot, but after using it for a week, I haven't noticed any significant heating problems. I mainly used it for photography, video recording, chatting, listening to music, browsing the web, and playing the Xianjian mobile game. In Guangzhou's hot weather in July, the phone did get a little warm outdoors, but it was barely noticeable indoors. I believe that phone heating is a common issue, not specific to the P40 Pro, and in my opinion, the heating issue of the P40 Pro is acceptable.

3. Battery Life: One Charge a Day, Enabled by Fast Charging

The P40 Pro is equipped with a 5050mAh battery, which is considered a larger battery capacity in the current market. However, it still maintains a one-charge-a-day level. This is actually the battery life of most smartphones currently, so there's no need to worry too much. Thankfully, the P40 Pro supports 100W super fast charging, fully charging in just over half an hour. The charging speed is incredibly fast.

4. Photography and Video Recording Capabilities: The Essence of a Photography Flagship

As Huawei's flagship phone for photography, the P40 Pro's photographic capabilities are naturally impressive. This phone features five default focal lengths: ultra-wide, 1X, 2X, 3.5X, and 10X. The video recording default focal lengths are ultra-wide, 1X, 2X, 4X, and 10X, with 4K60fps recording supported across all focal lengths. The 10X focal length is particularly noteworthy, as it's not common on many smartphones. It allows for capturing clearer distant photos and videos. The P40 Pro's camera algorithm is also excellent; it can quickly focus on the image during long-focus shots, delivering a better shooting experience. Additionally, this phone introduces a high-resolution mode, which increases the default output pixel by twice, further enhancing the photo's clarity and post-processing space.

5. Phone Weight: A Bit Heavy, But Acceptable

The P40 Pro weighs approximately 220g, and with a case, it's close to 250g. It's indeed heavier than previous phones. However, this is related to the phone's configuration and features; in comparison, the weight is still acceptable.

6. Performance Smoothness: Meets Daily Needs, Average Gaming Experience

The P40 Pro's performance is enough to meet daily needs. Whether it's opening multiple apps or running large games, it operates smoothly. However, for users who enjoy playing large-scale mobile games, the P40 Pro's gaming experience may not be particularly outstanding. Nevertheless, Huawei phones haven't been known for their exceptional gaming experience, which is related to system optimization and hardware configuration.

7. Signal Performance: Rock Solid, Signal Strength Deserves Praise

The P40 Pro's signal strength is incredibly strong. Even on the subway, the signal remains almost full, and the network speed is fast. Although I only tested it on the Guangzhou subway, I've always believed that Huawei phones have industry-leading signal performance.

Overall, the P40 Pro is a highly worthwhile phone. It boasts an excellent design, powerful photography abilities, good battery life, and stable signal performance, capable of meeting the needs of most users. Of course, this phone also has some drawbacks, such as a slightly heavier weight, an average gaming experience, etc. Ultimately, whether it suits you depends on your individual needs and budget.

Huawei P40 Pro One-Week Review: Worth Buying?

If you prefer the Mate series, you can wait for the Mate 50; if you prefer the P series, the P40 Pro is definitely worth considering.

Additionally, it's worth mentioning HarmonyOS. HarmonyOS is continuously optimized, and the user experience is getting better and better. Pure-blooded HarmonyOS is expected to further enhance the user experience. The Huawei P40 series will be among the first models to receive the official upgrade to pure-blooded HarmonyOS.

I hope my sharing will help you better understand the Huawei P40 Pro and make a more informed decision.
