In contrast, the pollution level of farms is low.

This is currently the most comprehensive related study. Researchers from the United States Geological Survey conducted tests at 716 locations across the United States, including urban and rural areas. The purpose of detection is to obtain information on perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water sources. PFAS is a miniature artificial chemical substance that takes thousands of years to fully decompose in the human body or environment, hence it is also known as a "permanent chemical substance".

The research results show that 45% of drinking water in the United States contains at least one "permanent chemical substance", of which the highest concentration is located in the Great Plains, the Great Lakes, the east coast and central and southern California. The researchers only detected 32 of 12000 kinds of FPAS. Therefore, if 12000 kinds of PFAS were detected, the actual data results would be higher.

The data results of the past five years show that in densely populated urban areas, the concentration of PFAS in tap water is generally higher than that in rural areas. The main reason for this phenomenon is that PFAS is contained in food packaging, pesticides, Non-stick surface and other products, which makes it easy for PFAS to enter water resources, and the town is closer to the factory, with greater risk.

Last year, researchers at Texas Tech tested 10 commonly used insecticides, which were applied to cotton fields and other crop fields. PFAS was found in 7 out of 10 insecticides, with one containing high concentrations of PFOS, a chemical that is highly susceptible to cancer.

PFAS values detected in public water and private well water

Among the 716 water sources, 447 are national public water sources and 269 are private well water sources. About 270 million Americans use national public water, 40 million use private well water, and everyone may be affected. Meanwhile, research results show that the concentration of PFAS in drinking water in certain areas severely exceeds the standard.

Research has also found that even consuming a small amount of PFAS can affect health. PFAS may cause heart disease, liver injury, infertility, Thyroid disease, cancer and other diseases.

In 2007, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 98% of the US human body contains a certain amount of "permanent chemicals".
