On July 12th, according to the latest research report by Canalys, the global PC market slowed down in the second quarter of 2023, with total shipments of desktops and laptops decreasing by 11.5% year-on-year to 62.1 million units. Among them, the shipment volume of laptops decreased by 9.3% year-on-year to 49.4 million units, while the shipment volume of desktop computers decreased even more, dropping by 19.3% to 12.6 million units. Previously, the shipment volume decreased by over 30% for two consecutive quarters. The shipment volume in the second quarter increased by 11.9% month on month, indicating that the market is expected to accelerate its recovery in the second half of this year.
Ishan Dutt, chief analyst at Canalys, believes that the personal computer market is showing early signs of a rebound. As the situation improves, companies will reallocate idle expenses for IT upgrades. In the second quarter of 2023, the return of public sector funds boosted the strong growth of PC return to school demand.
Kieren Jessop, a research analyst at Canalys, said: "Positive market signals indicate that the PC industry will further improve in 2023." 41% of Canalys' channel partners surveyed in June stated that their PC inventory is less than a week. During the remaining period of 2023, market shipments will continue to improve under the influence of inventory adjustments and enhanced seasonal factors.
The report also pointed out that Lenovo continues to lead the global personal computer market, but its shipment volume has significantly decreased by 18% year-on-year, to 14.2 million units. HP, ranked second, performed strongly this quarter with a global shipment volume of 13.4 million units. Dell maintained its third place position, but due to a 22% decrease in shipment volume, its market share decreased by more than two percentage points. Apple achieved the highest growth among major manufacturers in the second quarter of 2023, with shipments increasing by 51% year-on-year.
