At the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference Ascending Artificial Intelligence Industry Summit Forum held on July 6th, the "China AIforScience Innovation Map Research Report" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"), jointly prepared by the China Institute of Science and Technology Information Technology and the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Research Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and relevant research institutions, was officially released.

At the meeting, Zhao Zhiyun, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the China Institute of Science and Technology Information Technology, and Director of the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Research Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, introduced that artificial intelligence empowering scientific research has increasingly shown great potential to break through the bottleneck of traditional scientific research capabilities and is becoming a new paradigm for global scientific research. In recent years, China's artificial intelligence field has closely followed the forefront of the world, with high research enthusiasm and rapid capacity improvement, forming a good development trend. The report provides objective observations for promoting the innovative development of artificial intelligence in China through visualized dimensions of innovative elements such as data fusion of multiple structural types, basic software fusion of multi-disciplinary characteristics, talent fusion of multiple disciplines, and diversified computing power.

The report analyzes the published AIforScience results globally and finds that China, Europe, and the United States are significantly ahead, with China having the highest number of AIforScience papers published. At the same time, well-known universities, large scientific research institutions and leading enterprises at home and abroad all attach great importance to AIforScience. Google, Nvidia, DeepMind, Huawei, Baidu and other institutions abroad are actively promoting the development of global AIforScience.

The report points out that under policy guidance, China's AIforScience has developed rapidly, with multiple internationally influential achievements such as "MEGA Protocol", "Pengcheng Shennong", "Dongfang Yufeng", and Pangu Weather. Domestic AI for Science basic software such as PaddleScience and MindSporeScience are also becoming increasingly mature, providing rich datasets, basic models, and specialized tools for AI for Science research.

The report points out that a large number of AIforScience basic software such as DeePMD from Shenzhen Technology and Beijing Institute of Science and Intelligence, MindSporeScience from Huawei, and PaddleScience from Baidu have emerged one after another, and are actively promoting open source.

In terms of computing power, the report found through research on the distribution of computing infrastructure nationwide that China has a high degree of aggregation in computing power construction. In the past five years, Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Jiangsu have accounted for about 90% of the sales of artificial intelligence acceleration cards in the country. The computing power resources of central and western provinces still need to be expanded.

According to the investigation and analysis of more than 80 AIforScience studies being carried out in China, among the five most active key scientific research fields, AIforScience in biomedical, chemical/material and other fields has developed rapidly with the most achievements, while AIforScience in other fields is still in its infancy. From the perspective of characteristics, China's AIforScience technology is achieving specialized single scenario applications in various scientific research fields, and has shown great potential for industrialization. However, there has not yet been a universal AIforScience model across different fields. In terms of application and landing methods, providing service platforms and kits is currently the main landing method, while other landing modes still need to be explored.

Secretary Zhao Zhiyun pointed out that the application potential of artificial intelligence in the field of scientific research is enormous, and it is currently in a critical window of breakthrough development. However, it also faces many challenges such as factor supply and collaborative mechanisms. It is recommended to continuously strengthen research and development support in the AIforScience field, orderly promote the open sharing of scientific research data, accelerate the improvement of the basic software and hardware technology ecosystem, coordinate the construction of computing infrastructure, vigorously cultivate interdisciplinary and composite talents, and deepen and expand international cooperation in the AIforScience field.
