Huawei's rotating CEO Xu Zhijun responded to the question about when Huawei will have 5G phones, and the answer is to see the time allowed by the US Department of Commerce.
Upon hearing this sentence, I couldn't calm down for a long time. Let us have to face up to the existing gap, rather than being blindly flattered and blinded by those. We all know that the United States has been restricting shipments to domestic manufacturers such as Huawei for a period of time, with the sole purpose of bringing Huawei down. It is completely impossible to license chips. Even so, the United States continues to modify chip rules, further restricting the development of Chinese chips, and requiring new companies to not ship without obtaining new licenses.
Some high-performance chips even plan to restrict the shipment of 4G products such as Qualcomm, and no tripartite agreement has been reached to further restrict the shipment of advanced semiconductor devices. So it is currently impossible for Huawei to have a 5G phone. Huawei actually has many 5G patents, and what gets stuck is not technology, but manufacturing. Simply put, it's the design that cannot be made.
The most important aspect of these 5G phones is the chips, which can also be manufactured by domestic suppliers. However, due to limited manufacturing processes and core component bottlenecks, there is still a significant gap between domestic chips and mainstream high-end chips. For example, although 5G RF chips can already be produced, the filters in the chips are still not sufficient, and what can be done happens to be the kind that a certain enterprise still monopolizes.
At present, the suppliers that can produce high-end chips are three types of brands, TSMC, which happen to be controlled by the United States. So even if the manufacturing process of Huawei Kirin processors is excellent and they don't let us build them, we can't do it. To be frank, as long as it involves 5G related technology or components, the United States does not allow it to pass, of course, currently 4G is still excluded. So currently, if Huawei wants to sell smartphones, it can only sell 4G networks.
Yao Yang, president of the National Development Research Institute of Peking University, said in an interview that it is possible to "de Americanization" chips with a size of more than 28 nanometers. In the short term, we will indeed be subject to many restrictions and the gap will not disappear, but I think there will be hope for progress.
Supporting Huawei now is not about selling patriotism, it's about whether you support it or not. If China has a promising future, it will really be a long way off.
