The Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway: A Dream Along the River, a Future Connecting East and West
The Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway, a major transportation artery connecting Shanghai, Chongqing, and Chengdu, was once known as the "Along-the-River High-Speed Railway." However, as construction progressed, this name gradually faded from public view, with only the Jiangsu section still using the name "North Along-the-River High-Speed Railway" to correspond with the already completed "South Along-the-River High-Speed Railway."
The reason for this change in name is primarily due to the fact that the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway is not entirely built along the river. Although the railway does pass through several cities along the Yangtze River in the Jiangsu section, including Nantong, Taizhou, Yangzhou, and Nanjing, it passes through cities like Hefei and Liuan in Anhui, no longer directly adjacent to the Yangtze. Continuing westward, the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway passes through a few cities along the river, such as Wuhan and Chongqing, but more cities are located further away from the Yangtze. Therefore, to accurately reflect the railway's trajectory, the name "Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway" was ultimately adopted.
Therefore, the section from Shanghai to Nanjing is generally referred to as the "Along-the-River High-Speed Railway," while the entire railway is uniformly called the "Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway."
Currently, construction has commenced on most sections of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway. In the future, it will become a major east-west transportation corridor in China, connecting the Yangtze River Delta, central China, and southwestern regions. This will have significant implications for promoting regional economic development and personnel exchange. With the completion and operation of this railway, it is expected to bring new development opportunities to cities along its route, further bridging the distance between the east and west, and bringing China closer together.
