On September 8, 2024, the 2024 International Digital Energy Exhibition opened at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. Yang Yougui, Senior Vice President of Huawei and President of Global Marketing and Service System for Huawei Digital Power, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony and main forum, introducing Huawei's achievements in building the world's largest photovoltaic and storage microgrid power station in Saudi Arabia's Red Sea New City, and highlighting the key role of Huawei's GridForming energy storage technology in creating "power island" solutions.

 Red Sea New City: Huawei

Red Sea New City is the world's first green city powered entirely by 100% solar and energy storage, covering nearly 28,000 square kilometers and expected to receive millions of visitors annually. The project is a key part of Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030" plan, aiming to build a sustainable and eco-friendly future city.

 Red Sea New City: Huawei

Facing climate change, the Middle East region is actively seeking energy transformation. The Red Sea New City project reflects Saudi Arabia's ambitions in clean energy. Huawei Digital Power, together with its partners, has completed the construction of the world's largest photovoltaic and storage microgrid power station over a period of three years. The power station boasts 400 MW of photovoltaic power generation and 1.3 GWh of energy storage system, with a grid coverage exceeding 100 kilometers, providing a continuous supply of green energy to the new city.

 Red Sea New City: Huawei

Huawei Digital Power began investing in the research and development of GridForming energy storage technology a decade ago and applied it to the Red Sea New City project. This technology integrates digital technology, power electronics, and GridForming technology to create a world-leading grid-forming technology.

The Red Sea New City project, as a GWh-level microgrid, faced unprecedented world-class challenges in terms of grid formation, operating logic, safety, debugging, and verification. Addressing the complex grid environment in Red Sea New City, Huawei Digital Power, through its GridForming energy storage technology, transformed the photovoltaic and storage system into a reliable voltage source. This technology, through large-scale grid-forming techniques, robust microgrid fault ride-through capabilities, 100-kilometer-minute-level self-synchronizing black start technology, and active safety from core to network, ensures the stable and reliable operation of the Red Sea microgrid.

Since its commissioning in September 2023, the Red Sea 100% renewable energy microgrid has operated smoothly for a year, providing over 1 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity, fully establishing Saudi Arabia's global green image.

As the world's first grid-forming energy storage platform, Huawei's intelligent string-based grid-forming energy storage boasts features like full-architecture security, all-scenario grid formation, full-life-cycle economics, and full-chain digitalization. It also supports an open ecosystem, working with partners to ensure the high-quality and healthy development of the power station throughout its life cycle.

The Red Sea photovoltaic and storage microgrid project achieved a cost of electricity less than 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, less than one-third of the cost of traditional diesel power generation, providing Saudi Arabian customers with the optimal LCOE. Moreover, as the world's first GW-level project using grid-forming energy storage technology, it signifies that intelligent string-based grid-forming energy storage technology possesses the capability for large-scale commercialization, providing a benchmark demonstration for the construction of clean, efficient, and sustainable new power systems. It is a crucial technological milestone in the journey of photovoltaic energy becoming the dominant energy source.

As global energy structure transformation accelerates comprehensively, the energy industry is rapidly entering a new era of digital energy. Red Sea New City, as the first benchmark for human zero-carbon cities, will further explore humanity's imagination for future cities and sustainable development. Huawei Digital Power has stated that it will continue to promote the fusion and innovation of digital technology and power electronics to accelerate global sustainable development and energy industry transformation, working with more countries and cities to build a green and beautiful future.
