According to foreign media reports, a spokesperson for General Motors recently stated that the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike, which began on September 15th, caused approximately $200 million in losses to General Motors in the third quarter.

The UAW is striking General Motors, Ford, and Stanlantis, marking the first time in its history that the union has simultaneously struck three major union automakers in the United States. As of now, workers from two General Motors assembly plants and 20 parts distribution departments have participated in strikes, resulting in an average daily loss of $12.5 million for the company.

At a time of strong demand from car buyers and fierce competition from non union automakers such as Tesla and foreign brands, nationwide production stoppages and strikes may also make automakers pay a high price. It is understood that General Motors experienced a similar situation in 2019, with nearly 50000 employees holding a 6-week strike that ultimately resulted in the company losing approximately $2.9 billion.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra wrote to employees on Thursday stating that the company's latest offer now includes a 20% salary increase and an immediate 10% salary increase. Temporary workers with lower wages will receive $20 per hour, a 20% increase from the current $16.67 per hour. She called this proposal "historic".

In addition, there have been large-scale strikes in multiple industries in the United States since the beginning of this year. According to foreign media reports, as of September 23, approximately 362000 people in the United States have participated in strikes this year, compared to around 36000 people who participated in strikes during the same period two years ago.
