Since yesterday (September 19th), social media platforms have been flooded with reports from users experiencing WeChat public account crashes after updating their iPhone 14 Pro Max to iOS 18. Some users report that "the entire public account is unusable, crashing with any operation; I've tried various solutions." Screenshots shared by users on social media show that similar issues were reported on Xiaohongshu, where users claimed that opening WeChat subscriptions after upgrading to the new version 8.0.51 resulted in crashes, even after restarting their phones. Multiple users reported experiencing similar issues on their iPhones in the comments. Some users stated that even redownloading, logging in again, and restarting their devices didn't solve the problem.

Social media users have also reported continuous irregularities within WeChat. On September 20th, a reporter from Yicai Global called Apple support as a consumer and described the WeChat subscription crash after updating to iOS 18 and WeChat. Apple support suggested deleting and reinstalling WeChat, as this usually resolves such issues. Previously, users had reported issues with certain functionalities within certain apps that were resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling the software. The crashes could be caused by the phone system update not yet being recognized by WeChat, and reinstalling it should allow recognition.

Previously, there were reports about Apple increasing pressure on Tencent and ByteDance, aiming to "plug" loopholes in mini-game payments and prevent developers from redirecting users to external payment systems. Apple had warned Tencent that they would refuse to provide updates for WeChat if they didn't remove the ability of developers and users to circumvent the Apple ecosystem.

On September 6th, WeChat updated its iOS version to 8.0.51, temporarily calming speculation of "iPhone 16 not supporting WeChat, choose between Apple and WeChat."
