China's first hydrogen fuel cell powered demonstration ship, "Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1," made its maiden voyage yesterday (October 11th) in Yichang, Hubei, the starting point of the Yangtze River Three Gorges. This also marks a breakthrough in the application of hydrogen fuel cell technology to inland ships in China.

At around 9am, the blue and white new ship "Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1" slowly departed from the barge at the Three Gorges Tourist Center in Yichang, Hubei. The "Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1" is a hydrogen fuel cell powered ship jointly developed and built by Yangtze River Electric Power, China Shipbuilding 712 Research Institute, and other units under the Three Gorges Group. It has a total length of 49.9 meters, a maximum speed of 28 kilometers/hour, and a range of 200 kilometers. After delivery, it will be used for transportation, inspection, and emergency work between the Three Gorges Reservoir Area and the two dams between the Three Gorges and Gezhouba.

Ran Yichuan, Deputy General Manager and Chief Engineer of Changjiang Power, introduced that the "Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1" is mainly powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which directly convert the chemical energy of hydrogen and oxygen into electrical energy, resulting in higher power generation efficiency. Moreover, the reaction product is water, which does not cause pollution emissions.

At the Yangjiawan Wharf downstream of the Three Gorges Project, the first domestic inland river dock type hydrogen production and refueling integrated station is equipped with it. The green electricity generated by the Three Gorges Power Station is used to electrolyze water for hydrogen production, and the produced hydrogen is then compressed, stored, and filled to directly supply hydrogen energy ships.

According to calculations, the "Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1" is expected to replace approximately 103 tons of fuel annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 343 tons compared to traditional fuel powered ships.
