The 'Beishan No.1' successfully completed its first underground turn

Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, May 29 (Reporter Jiao Yang) - With a horizontal turning radius of 200 meters and a vertical curve radius of 380 meters, it will move forward in a spiral manner at a depth of 590 meters underground.

Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, May 29 (Reporter Jiao Yang) - With a horizontal turning radius of 200 meters and a vertical curve radius of 380 meters, it will move forward in a spiral manner at a depth of 590 meters underground... This is the construction site of the China Beishan Underground Laboratory project under construction, located in Mazongshan, Subei County, Gansu Province. On May 29th, China's self-developed large slope spiral tunneling machine "Beishan No.1" successfully turned here for the first time.

The preliminary verification of the reliability of the design scheme for long-distance extremely hard rocks, small radius spiral turns, and large slope and long-distance downhill slopes marks a significant breakthrough in the application of achievements in this technological innovation field in China, "said Xu Chunxian, the head of construction of the Beishan Underground Laboratory of China Railway 18th Bureau Group.

At this point, the main engineering ramp of the Beishan Underground Laboratory in China has fully entered the rapid construction phase.

The geological conditions of the Beishan underground laboratory in China are mainly composed of slightly weathered granite, with a quartz content of 25% to 30%. The uniaxial saturated compressive strength of the rock exceeds 260 MPa, exceeding the standard for general hard rocks by 200 units. It belongs to extremely hard rock geology with high construction difficulty. Among them, the spiral ramp project is a key main project of the laboratory, with a total length of about 7.2 kilometers. It is excavated clockwise from the surface, with a comprehensive slope of 10%, which is equivalent to a height decrease of 1 meter for every 10 meters of tunnel excavation forward. "Xu Chunxian said.

"Beishan No.1", jointly built by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Group and China Railway 18th Bureau Group, is tailored for the Beishan Underground Laboratory Project in China. It is also the world's first large gradient spiral tunnel boring machine, with a length of about 100 meters and a diameter of 7.03 meters. It can solve the problem of spiral small turn tunneling in continuous large gradient tunnels.

Xu Chunxian said that in China, it is customary in the industry to refer to tunneling machines used in underwater and soft soil formations as shield machines, and tunneling machines used in rock formations as TBM. In the past 20 years, the application of tunnel excavation equipment in China has undergone a technological leap from foreign manufacturing and construction to independent manufacturing and construction, and then to Chinese manufacturing and going global. "Beishan 1" is currently a leading cutting-edge technology representative in the world's TBM field.

In order to achieve a horizontal 200 meter turning radius and a vertical 380 meter curve radius spiral tunneling, "Beishan 1" has improved the spatial structure and control system of the host system, controlling the overall size of the equipment to be within 100 meters and the diameter to be 7.03 meters. It is also equipped with advanced guidance, directional control warning, and auxiliary driving automatic cruise control systems, which enable the tunneling machine to have the spiral curve tunneling ability under conditions of large slope and small turning radius.

By using a new type of roller with high load-bearing and narrow blade shape, the teeth of "Beishan No.1" are sharper, which not only meets the construction requirements under extremely hard rock geological conditions, but also improves the reliability and durability of continuous operations, increasing construction efficiency by three times, laying a solid foundation for safe and efficient project construction.

The Beishan Underground Laboratory in China is one of the major projects under the "13th Five Year Plan". It officially started construction in June 2021 and will become the largest, most fully functional, and most widely involved underground laboratory in the world, filling the gap in China's underground research and development platform and equipment for high-level waste disposal technology, and providing an experimental platform and foundation for tackling the global problem of high-level waste geological disposal.
